Chalice Lighters - Helping Our Light Shine!

The Chalice Lighter Program of the Northern New England District is a brilliant and simple way for us to live our covenant with each other and to support the growth and development of Unitarian Universalism in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Individual Unitarian Universalists each give a little, the proverbial drop in a bucket. We pool all our little bits to create a substantial sum of money for making significant grants to our congregations. Together we help congregations build and remodel, add professional staff or take on a project to foster their growth.

Since the Chalice Lighter Program began in 2008, we have given Major Grants of $4000 to $5000 for a building acquisition, settling a minister, a new building including an elevator, remodeling a kitchen for more community outreach, and a major building renovation including an elevator and Religious Education classrooms. We have also given a Small Growth Grant of about $1800 to increase the hours of the Director of Religious Education in a growing Religious Education program. Together, we are growing and expanding Unitarian Universalism in Northern New England. We dream of the day when every Unitarian Universalist in the District is a Chalice Lighter and we can give grants of $75,000!

How to Be a Chalice Lighter

You become a Chalice Lighter simply by filling out an Enrollment Form (See Box) and sending it to the District Office. Three times a year, the Chalice Lighter Committee will send you a Call Letter asking for a donation. For each call, you are asked to give $15 to help fund a building project, add professional staff, or develop a growth project that will help spread the light of Unitarian Universalism. Each Call Letter will tell you about the grant you will be helping to fund.

How to Apply for a Grant

Congregations may apply for assistance with projects designed to help a congregation grow or expand its outreach. Major Chalice Lighter Grants help to fund building projects, including energy efficiency and accessibility, or adding professional staff. Small Growth Grants fund smaller growth initiatives.  Congregations are expected to have a clear plan and budget for their project.  Preference will be given to congregations that pay their Fair Share to the UUA and the District, or have a clear plan for achieving Fair Share.  The application deadlines are
