Resources for Small Congregations

FAQs About Buildings and Grounds

Small congregations live with different realities. Some meet in private homes, others rent. Some own a sacred space that is a vital part of their ministry while others own a sacred space that their membership has a tough time supporting and it may or may not serve their vision. Five questions asked are:

Is there money available for buildings?

Start with your District Staff and then visit the UUA site for information on:

Building Loan

Program

First Home Grant Program

Loan Guarantee Program

Site Acquisition Loan Program

Also there is a great list of UUA associated grants available for multiple purposes. Contact your District Staff person for more information.

What can we do to be more safe?

Safety for all people in a UU congregation includes buildings and grounds, policies and procedures protecting individuals and the group, and preparation for disasters both human and naturally made. You will find information about safety concerns at this UUA site.

What do we need to think about to make decisions about buildings; old, new, renting, etc?

Difficult decisions about buildings can derail a congregation if they are not grounded in the mission and vision of the congregation. Call District Staff if you would like support to frame issues so that the answers reflect the vision of your congregation.
