Youth Ministry in Northern New England District
Youth ministry flourishes when it
- Meets the spiritual needs of youth
- Is affirmed and supported within congregations
- Develops respectful and mutually accountable youth-adult relationships
- Is led by well trained and spiritually grounded youth and adults
- Finds opportunities to practice its values in the wider community
- Cultivates and empowers leadership skills in youth
The district’s Youth Ministry Task Force includes youth, young adults, ministers and religious educators. Its primary task is to provide a mission, vision and goals for youth ministry in the district as well as oversight of the district youth council and the youth-adult committee.
Mission Statement
The Youth Ministry Task Force, in a covenanted relationship with youth,
young adults and adults, of the Northern New England District of the
Unitarian Universalist Association, will increase and promote the support of,
focus on and sustainability of excellent youth ministry at the congregational, cluster, district and national levels.
Congregations, districts and the UUA have been urged through the passage of the Youth and Young Adult Empowerment Resolution at the 2008 General Assembly to support youth ministry with adequate funding, staffing and support.
Youth-Adult Organizations within the District
There are currently two youth-adult organizations in the district, the district youth council primarily serving NH/VT youth and the Youth-Adult Committee in Maine. Both of these organizations plan and host weekend youth conferences.
Congregational youth groups can also plan and host youth conferences with guidance and support from the district office. Youth conferences strive to build community, develop leadership skills, meet spiritual needs of youth through worships, focus on social action issues, provide workshops with various topics, and to have fun. Youth conferences are youth-led within a safe and covenanted community of youth and adults.
